Indigenous Food Sovereignty
The Indigenous Food Sovereignty program was developed by the Indigenous People’s Network of Massachusetts and Rhode Island. This program, led by Rocky Johnson of the Narragansett Tribe, serves indigenous communities in Rhode Island and Connecticut by teaching people how to grow their own healthy medicine through herbs, fruits and vegetables.
We practice traditional American Indian farming techniques and never use chemical fertilizers or pesticides. With a dedication to expanding indigenous foodways across the region, we provide hands-on training to program participants, while also offering knowledge and labor to those unable of grow and harvest, including elders and people with disabilities. Let us share our vision of food sovereignty right in your backyard.
Healing the Land
Healing the Land provides a suite of free trainings to farmers, ranchers, and land stewards across the Northeast as they work to create a healthier earth and advance indigenous food sovereignty. In partnership with Global Village and the Northeast Organic Farming Association, we offer guidance and mentorship around climate mitigation, natural resource conservation, and soil health. We also include opportunities for individuals, farms, and/or organizations to (re)envision their land ethic and integrate indigenous knowledge into their practice.
Farm Finance
Our finance program provides supports and education to farmers and ranchers across the Northeast to grow their livelihoods and financial resilience in an ever-changing world. In partnership with Nichols College, Global Village and the Northeast Organic Farming Association, we offer education around business development, financial literacy, and marketing. We also provide grant research/writing services and facilitate access to USDA programs and funding.
Direct Assistance
The Direct Assistance program provides financial support to families struggling to keep up with the seemingly endless rise in food, utilities, and housing costs. In partnership with The Boston Foundation, we provide assistance to help families weather the storm, while also providing referrals to local, state, and federal services for situations requiring more long-term solutions. We currently operate in Essex, Suffolk, Middlesex, Plymouth, and Norfolk Counties.
