The Indigenous Food Sovereignty program is a tribal community micro-farming initiative developed by the Indigenous People’s Network of Massachusetts and Rhode Island, and fiscally sponsored by the Pocasset Pokanoket Land Trust, a tribal 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The program is led by Rocky Johnson, a Narragansett Indian. It serves marginalized BIPOC communities in Rhode Island and Connecticut by teaching people how to grow their own medicine through herbs, fruits and vegetables. Our farming techniques are traditional Native American and we never use chemical fertilizers or pesticides. We provide hands-on training, but we also plant and harvest fresh foods for those who are incapable of gardening, such as the elderly and the disabled.
Rocky is appreciative of donations that allow him to purchase supplies for his gardens. Donations and grants have begun paying him for the time that he puts into the program as well.
Donations of supplies are helpful as well! The Indigenous Roots Forever Food Access program is looking for:

This program runs from April through October every year.
We will likely have volunteer opportunities for this program in 2024. Locations, dates, and details haven’t been established yet, however. Please follow PPLT on Facebook or visit this page this summer to learn more about available opportunities.
All donations go directly to high quality education, advocacy and other work in land conservation, sustainable agriculture, economic development, healthcare, and Indigenous Culture preservation.
